      stadt, near Stuttgart, May ioth, 1869. Eminent performer. His father, a town musician, instructed his son on several instruments, but the young artist showed a great preference for the violin, upon which his progress was most rapid. At the age of fourteen he was sent to Munich, and placed under the direction of Rovelli, first fiddle in the Royal Chapel. Two years afterwards he went to Vienna, and was placed in the orchestra of the theatre An der Wien. In 1820 he returned to Munich and succeeded hismaster, Rovelli, as court violinist. In 1822 he obtained leave of absence, and undertook a concert tour, visiting Leipzig, Dresden, Berlin, Hanover, and Cassel, and met with great success. In 1826 he became attached to the Court of Stuttgart as Conzertmeister, and soon attracted notice as a conductor of remarkable ability. In 1836, Molique visited Paris,and performed one of hiscon-certos at the Society des Concerts du Conservatoire. In 1849 he visited London and established a great reputation as professor of his instrument. Molique returned to Germany in 1866, and settled at Cannstadt.
