' Stamitz, Anton, born at Mannheim in
1753, died in Paris -? Fiddler andcomposer of merit. Went to Paris about 1770 and settled there. Compositions: 12 quartets for strings; 6 trios fordo.; Concerto for violin ; 6 duos for violin and 'cello ; 6 trios for flute and strings ; Airs varies for violin and 'cello; 6 duos for violin and flute; 3 concertos for harpsichord ; Concertos for 'cello.
Stamitz, Johann Karl, born at Deutch-brod, Bohemia, in 1719, died at Mannheim in 1761. Esteemed fiddler and composer, entirely self-taught; was in 1745 elected conzertmeister and director of chamber music in the Court of the Elector at Mannheim. In his time he enjoyed a great reputation as a composer. Compositions : 6 sonatas for harpsichord and violin; 12 sonatas for violin and bass; 12 symphonies; 6 violin concertos ; 6 trios for strings; Exercises; a quantity of concertos, symphonies, solos, &c., in MS.
