Vacher, Pierre Jean (or Le Vacher), born at Paris, Aug. 2nd, 1772, died in Paris in 1819. Fiddler and composer of merit. He commenced the study of the violin at eight years of age, first under Andr6 Monin, and afterwards under the celebrated Viotti. From the age of fourteen to nineteen, he was engaged as violinist at the principal theatre at Bordeaux. At the commencement of the French Revolution he went to Paris, where he remained several years engaged in the orchestra of the Vaudeville Theatre. He then became known as a composer of popular airs for that theatre. Vacher was afterwards employed in the orchestras of the Theatre Feydeau, and of the Opera. Several romances of his composition became great favourites of the French public ; amongst these were Pouv Tot; Le Plaisir et /' Esperence ; La Verdure; L'Invocation a V A mi lie ; Le Voyage a Barege; and La Sympathie en Amour. He also published the following : Trios for two violins and bass, Op. 3 ; Airs varies for violin and 'cello ; Duos for two violins; Liv 1 and 2 ; Several variations for violin alone; Pots-pourris (idem).
