our Company would not play such a trick on any of its insured. I only laid the case before you to show you that we have been as condescending as possible, and only refused to grant what we really could not grant.
   I. This last argument of yours is quite conclusive and cuts short any further debate on the matter.
I feel that in my turn I also must be condescending; so I give up (i) my claim for damages to the furniture in my lodging, and am willing to come to an arrangement. To What indemnity should I then be entitled ?
   M. The reckoning is easily made. From your original claim of two thousand pounds, we have deducted two hundred for a higher valuation of the goods saved, fifty for disclaimed risk of store premises, and one hundred for same of the furniture in your lodging. Thus altogether three hundred and fifty ; which reduces the figure of your due to sixteen hundred and fifty pounds.
   Do you agree to that?
   I. I do, sir.
   (i) Il verbo to Give « dare» unito all' avverbio up « su » acquista il significato di «rinunciare», «cedere» e simili.
   M. All right. On Monday next please call in at our Margate Agency-office, where you will sign a regular deed of settlement (i) and thereupon receive a cheque on the Bank of England for the above amount. Our business is over and I feel highly pleased that the settlement has been carried out in a satisfactory way for both parties.
   I. So do I, and will soon wait on you again for an addition to my policy. Experience has taught me what unpleasant consequences may derive from lack of precision, and I intend to put things on a safer footing for the future.
   M. I shall always be ready at your service, but you may arrange any alteration on your policy with our Margate agent. Meanwhile I wish you a happy journey home. Take care of yourself, good bye.
   (i) Deed of settlement L'atto di regolamento, s'intende « regolamento del sinistro ».
